Muhammad Haidar Daulay, a researcher at Sebijak Institute UGM, has been selected as a participant in the Australia Awards Short Course on Sustainable Finance: Transforming Challenges into Opportunities. Funded by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the course was delivered by the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology Sydney from 4 to 20 October 2024, in Sydney and Melbourne. This program is one of the prestigious short courses and scholarships offered by the Australia Awards in Indonesia (AAI) to Indonesia’s emerging leaders.
The short course materials and discussions covered topics on climate finance, climate transition plans, climate scenarios, climate-related disclosures, decarbonization pathways, green bonds, green taxonomy, ESG ratings, circular economy and more. Through the discussion of these topics, participants are expected to explore the opportunities within Indonesia’s sustainable finance agenda.
Site visits were conducted to several institutions to gain insights from practitioners in the field. The institutions included the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia, Taronga Zoo, Clean Energy Finance Corporation, New South Wales Treasury, Victorian Treasury, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, Reserve Bank of Australia, Aware Super (a leading superannuation fund), as well as major Australian banks such as Westpac and National Australia Bank. Alongside suite visits there were a number of influential guest speakers from organisations such as the Australian Sustainable Finance Institute and the Net Zero Academy Agency. These visits and speakers provided diverse perspectives on sustainable finance and its implementation across sectors.
Each participant develops a project related to sustainable finance. Haidar is collaborating with participants from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to develop a policy brief titled “The Potential of Payment for Environmental Services as an Opportunity for Sustainable Finance Implementation in the Indonesian Forestry Sector.” The policy brief is expected to be completed by January 2025 and will be presented during the post-course workshop in Jakarta at the end of February 2025. It will also be submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry as input and consideration for enhancing sustainable finance policies within the forestry sector.
