The IX International Forestry Summer Course 2025 Series : “The Forest Nexus: Innovation in Sustainability Food, Energy, and Water Sustainability”

Yogyakarta, 12th to 17th of August 2025, The Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) continues the series of activities under the IX International Forestry Summer Course 2025 by presenting keynote lectures, thematic discussions, and best-practice sharing sessions with international participants. This annual international program carries the theme “The Forest Nexus: Innovation in Food, Energy, and Water Sustainability”, highlighting the vital role of forestry in maintaining the balance of food, energy, and water resources in a sustainable manner. The program was officially opened on 11th of August, 2025 with welcoming remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Sigit Sunarta, Ph.D., and the Program Coordinator, Ananto Triyogo, Ph.D. Following the opening, participants engaged in a one week series of online sessions (12th – 17th of August 2025) designed to provide foundational knowledge and interactive exchanges. These sessions set the stage for the on-site program in Yogyakarta from 18th to 26th of August 2025, where participants deepened their insights through direct academic and cultural immersion.

The program was attended by 37 students from 11 countries: India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan, Nigeria, Gambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Austria, and Indonesia. The participants represented 12 universities around the world, including Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Kerala Agricultural University, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Partido State University, University of the Philippines, Technical University of Dresden, Kyushu University, University of Graz, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universitas Internasional Islam Indonesia, Universitas Mulawarman, and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).

During the first week, participants attended lectures delivered by distinguished speakers from both Indonesia and abroad. On the second day of the online sessions, the discussions centered on the theme of food, highlighting innovative approaches and sustainable practices related to forestry’s role in ensuring future food security. Within this theme, several speakers were involved, Prof. Yoshihito Iuchi (Kyushu University, Japan), who discussed the potential of insects as a future food source; Dr. Atus Syahbudin (Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia), who presented on forests as a source of medicinal resources; and Prof. Ki Woo Kim (Kyungpook National University, South Korea), who highlighted the health status of forests in Korea.

On the third day, interdisciplinary topics were also highlighted by Dr. Eka Tarwaca (Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia) on the prospects of integrating forestry and agriculture for food production. Furthermore, the next speaker explained the importance of water conservation, presented by  Prof. Ambar Kusumandari (Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia). At the end of the session,  Dr. Tharnrat Kaewgrajang (Kasetsart University, Thailand), presented the role of beneficial insects in forest ecosystems and their potential utilization for ecological and economic purposes.

On the fourth day, Dr. Affendy Hassan (Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia) shared his expertise and experiences on the practice of agroforestry, followed by Endita Prima Arie Pratiwi, Ph.D. (Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia) who highlighted the importance of sustainable forest resource management. The next speaker, Dr. Anand Nainar (Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia) explained the perspective on watershed management. Besides the academician, Forestry Summer Course 2025 also invited several professionals/practitioners to discuss several topics related to energy transition issues, which was delivered by Abidah B. Setyowati, Ph.D. (World Bank). The next speaker, Aditya Bayunanda (WWF), shared his experience on the practice of environmental conservation.

All activities from the 12th to the 17th of August were just the beginning for International Forestry Summer Course 2025. This program will be continued until the 26th of August, 2025, and will be conducted offline, such as through field visits, thematic workshops, and deep discussions with the experts and practitioners in the forestry field.
